Learning is optimized when it involves play - playing with books and words! This poem by an unknown author can be found in many places. I have seen it on the wall at the East Central Development Center for years! How wonderful that it is still so timely and relevant to our work with children, parents and caregivers.
I tried to teach my child with books;
He gave me only puzzled looks.
I tried to teach my child with words;
They passed him by, often unheard.
In despair I turned aside,
"How will I teach my child?" I cried.
Into my hand he put the key.
"Come," he said, "and play with me!"
