One more visit to Millers Pond

Tomorrow at 9:30 will be our last Play & Learn of 2015! If you haven't had a chance to join us under the pavilion at Millers Pond, here are a few reasons you might want to make the trip:

  1. Sunny and cool weather in the forecast. Wearing a light jacket or sweater would be wise.
  2. Ducks! When you and your child aren't busy with the play dough, blocks or other activities, the ducks provide plenty of opportunities for observation. But, please, don't feed them. This article from Audubon explains why.
  3. Fun early literacy interactions: We'll have books and activities as usual for you and your child to enjoy together while building pre-reading skills. Plus, you might make some new friends.

If you aren't able to go to Millers Pond tomorrow, please consider joining us at the Woodlawn Community Room, adjacent to Woodlawn Gym, beginning January 21, 2016.

Rain in the forecast?

According to the National Weather Service, there may be thunderstorms during this Thursday's Play & Learn at Millers Pond. Thanks to the large pavilion at Millers Pond, we can have Play & Learn even in the rain! The program will be cancelled only if there is flooding in the area or other hazardous conditions.

See you Thursday!

Fishing and More at Millers Pond

On Thursday, October 15 at 9:30AM Little Read Wagon will begin a new Play & Learn series at Millers Pond Park. We'll continue to bring fun early litearcy activities to Millers Pond every Thursday through November 19. This park on the southwest side of San Antonio has a big pavilion so we can have our programs rain or shine. The park also has a lovely lake with a one-mile trail if you'd like to go for a stroll, and a playscape for preschoolers and daring toddlers. Certainly we'll have some pretend fishing as an activity!

If you would like to introduce your children to real fishing, Millers Pond is one of two Neighborhood Fishin' locations in San Antonio. Visit this page for more information about fishing regulations: http://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/urban/regulations.phtml Please note that children under 17 fish for free, but adults must have a freshwater license.

Tour of Parks

In preparation for the next year, Little Read Wagon staff is considering several City of San Antonio parks as possible Play & Learn sites. Which parks do you enjoy visiting with your family?

Visit the Parks and Recreation website for the full list of parks maintained by the City of San Antonio.

Can you identify this park?

Hint: It is on the South side of town and begins with a "T".

July 6, 2015

Can you name two places that start with "W" and are lots of fun?

Yes! Our Play & Learn locations for the rest of July: Woodlawn Lake and Walker Ranch Park!

On Tuesdays, July 7, 14, 21 and 28 the Little Read Wagon team will bring Play & Learn to the Woodlawn Lake Community/Wi-Fi Room. Look for us at the corner of Cincinnati and Alexander, on the south end of the tile-roofed gym.

On Thursdays, July 9, 16, 23 and 30 we will be at Walker Ranch Park. Please access the park from West Avenue. We'll be in the pavilion and playground area.

Programs at both locations begin at 9:00am. This week we'll be exploring birds and bugs.

I am an artist!

This week at Play & Learn we are exploring what it means to be an artist. This includes lots of opportunities for creative expression. Join us on Thursday at 9:00am at Martin Luther King Park (rain or shine, barring any flooding!) for some color mixing, singing, dancing, sewing, sculpting and reading fun!

Even if you don't make it to Play & Learn, perhaps you'd enjoy this book by one of our favorite authors. It's available in English and Spanish.

CANCELED: Today's Play & Learn at Martin Luther King Park

Due to flooding in the immediate area and forecast continued heavy rain, this morning's Play & Learn at Martin Luther King Park is canceled. Weather permitting, Play & Learn will resume next week. Please stay safe if you are out and about today!
